We have partnered with the KU Lied Center to provide field trips for 2nd graders from New York Elem, Wakarusa Valley Elem, Schwegler Elem, and Pinckney Elem. These trips are being held as part of a Kansas Arts Commission grant to connect science and arts using several of Eric Carle’s early childhood books such as The Very Hungry Caterpillar. A theatrical production of his books will be done by the Mermaid Theater from Nova Scotia. Local storyteller Priscilla Howe will also be working with students prior to and after their field trip events. In July, Lawrence teachers took part in a workshop designed to strengthen teachers’ ability to use fine arts to teach science. Wetland Learners Coordinators Sandy Sanders and Alison Reber took teachers on a virtual field trip to the Wakarusa River Valley including wetlands and pollinator ties to The Very Hungry Caterpillar. The field trip events are scheduled throughout October. Please see the KVHA Calendar to volunteer to help.
